As part of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) program, Second Street Youth Center (SSYC) summer camp attendees hold their Summer Showcase presentation on Wednesday, August 22 at 2 PM.
Although school is out and the summer is known as a time for fun and recreation, the SSYC summer camp keeps pace with continued learning in the key STEAM areas. Research shows that during the summer, most youth particularly those from lower income families with fewer resources, fail to fully retain what they have learned the prior school year. The losses have been shown to be most acute in the areas of reading and math and without the proper learning stimulation and healthy meals, a serious summer slide occurs.
Our goal at SSYC is for kids to have an active, healthy summer full of enriched learning; smarter summers lead to brighter futures. From drumming to dance, drama to science, swimming to sports activities, group performance to open play, our aim at SSYC is to enjoy healthy food, fun, friendship as well as social and educational growth.
In our Summer Showcase presentation, one can view the campers’ completed projects; watch a demonstration of African dance and tap dance, hear trash percussion, see balloon powered cars, observe plantings and produce from our vegetable garden, witness solar ovens, view collage photography, and see a demonstration of computer coding.
Please help SSYC celebrate the accomplishments of Plainfield’s youth, Wednesday August 22 at 2 PM. Light refreshments will be provided. SSYC is located at 935 South Second Street in Plainfield, NJ. Please RSVP to Jeff Scheckner (contact info below) if you will be attending.
