Crescent Concerts November 3

The Crescent Choral Society is excited to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the World War I Armistice by performing the monumental work Mass in Time of War by Joseph Haydn and Tell the Earth to Shake by Gwyneth Walker. Separated by almost 200 years, these two compositions offer vastly different musical styles and challenge the performers to bring them both to life. Conducted by Crescent Concerts own Artistic Director, Dr. Deborah Simpkin King, this concert promises to be inspirational, because we are combining our talents with the select Westfield High School Chorale as well as the New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra, blending young and mature performers – no generation gap here!

Haydn’s “Missa in Tempori Belli” is often referred to as “Paukenmesse” (Tympani Mass) because of the prominent use of the tympani in the Agnus Dei, suggesting cannon sounds. We also hear trumpet calls, suggesting war, although it is unclear if Haydn intended the work to have an anti-war message. Dr. Gwyneth Walker is a highly respected composer with a special interest in dramatic works that combine sung music with the spoken word. Based on the poem “Earthquake” by the Trappist Monk Thomas Merton, the work weaves the Latin word “Pacem” throughout all voices, and clearly promotes a sincere message of peace.

We are so proud to present this concert not to be missed! We look forward to seeing you there, and yes, bring a friend who can also come and enjoy it. If you have not pre-bought your tickets, they will be at the door for you.
