I Wonder As I Wander…
We hope your wandering has not been too badly curtailed by all this rain! Yes, it seems unending, but to lift your spirits, plan on coming to our annual Yuletide by Candlelight concert. It’s my favorite time of the year, so please look forward with me to seeing the sanctuary aglow with the light of many candles, the wreaths adorning our gothic pillars, and the Crescent Singers surrounding you with beautiful Christmas music of every age!
From the back of the church you will hear John Jacob Niles plaintive “I Wonder As I Wander” and then Benjamin Britten’s setting of the ancient Procession from his Ceremony of Carols will bring us into the Sanctuary. Later you will hear the tumultuous Deo Gracias from that same work. We will share with you not one, but two very different settings of the text There Is No Rose of Such Virtue, one composed in 1954 and one written especially for Deborah in 2006. And we will sing two wonderful spirituals, Keep Your Lamps and See Dat Babe sure to get your toes tapping! Ancient melodies in new settings will be represented by Carson Cooman’s Adam Lay Ybounden and John Ferguson’s Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent. That’s just a sampling, and remember, you will be asked to join us on several carols, so bring your best voice to share - we need you!
This concert is our free gift to the community, so there is no admission charge. We do invite you to make a free will offering to support Crescent Avenue church’s Food Pantry which hands our free lunches every weekday. We have always made it open seating, so come early to sit in your favorite spot! Oh, and bring all your friends, too.
